Tillandsia – Xerographica

Price range: R360,00 through R485,00

Xerographica is referred to as the Queen of Air Plants! It is one of the most stunning and unique of all the Tillandsia Species. It is one of the larger growing plants reaching sizes of up to 60cm. The foliage is green/grey due to the high number of Trichomes on its surface.

This plant will not do well indoors unless given plenty of direct sunlight. Xerographica has a long, yellow inflorescence, producing many purple, tubular flowers.

As is right for every Queen, she needs to sit on a throne :-) Because she has such long beautiful leaves that curl downwards, she does not do well on a flat surface and needs to be displayed on a tall stand, allowing her gorgeous leaves to cascade downwards.

The small plant is appr the size of two large fists placed together, while the larger plant is nearly the size of a soccer ball.

Description

Airplants, also known as Tillandsia, are relatively easy to care for so they are great for beginners.

They are fascinating plants in that they do not get any nutrients or water from their roots. The roots are only used for attaching themselves to a growing surface, nothing more, so all the plant’s nutrients and water requirements are absorbed through its leaves.

Basic Growing Guidelines:

Light: Tillandsias need bright indirect light. They will thrive if placed in an area that gets morning or evening sun for a few hours but avoid the harsh midday sun.
Soil: No Soil is required. These plants can be attached to anything you want for display. A plastic pot with the bottom cut out, works great. (Refer Gallery Pics) Check out my blog for creative ways to display your Tillandsia’s
Feeding: You can supplement feeding monthly using a light foliar fertilizer sprayed directly onto the leaves.
Humidity: 60% plus is ideal.
Water:  Xerographica is considered a Xeric plant (comes from an area with less moisture) so does not require as much water as others. Wet the plant weekly but ensure it does not have any water left in the crown.
Temperature: Tillandsias are tropical plants and prefer temperature ranges from 10 to 30 degrees Celcius. They are not tolerant of cold temperatures.
Dormancy: Growth will slow right down during winter, but plants will not die back.
