Silica Sand

R20,00

Silica sand helps keep plant roots healthy as it creates a lighter, freer-draining mix that closely mimics what these plants experience in the wild. It also provides a great top cover layer preventing the soil from getting disturbed during rain or watering.

Description

The Use of Silica Sand in Carnivorous Plant Soil Mixes

Silica sand plays an important role in certain carnivorous plant soil mixes, especially for species that prefer excellent drainage and a more mineral-rich substrate.

Carnivorous plants naturally grow in nutrient-poor, sandy or peaty environments, and silica sand helps replicate these conditions without introducing unwanted minerals or fertilisers.

🌱 Why silica sand is used:

  • Improves drainage: Prevents water from sitting around the roots, reducing the risk of rot

  • Increases aeration: Creates air pockets in the soil so roots can breathe

  • Adds structure: Helps keep the mix open and prevents compaction over time

  • Inert and safe: True silica sand contains no nutrients, salts, or additives that could harm carnivorous plants

🌱 Which plants benefit most

Silica sand is especially useful for:

  • Cephalotus follicularis

  • Some Pinguicula species

  • Certain Drosera (particularly South African and Australian species)

  • Sarracenia grown in wetter or high-rainfall conditions, where extra drainage is helpful

It also creates a nice top layer preventing any of the soil beneath getting disturbed during rain or watering.

Each bag contains the approximate volume of a 1-litre jug.
