Drosera – Paradoxa

R350,00

Paradoxa produce a rosette of leaves with long leaf stalks which have small round sticky balls of dew at the ends of the leaf blades, which they use to catch their prey. It’s on these fluffy ends where the insects are lured and get stuck, and then slowly get digested. These plants can grow up to 30cm tall. These are a little more challenging to grow than regular sundews, but once the suitable spot is found, they will reward you with long beautiful stems.

These rare plants, carefully propagated from my own Private Collection, are true collector’s items and hard to find.

Description

Sundews are relatively easy to care for so they are great for beginners. They are fascinating hunters, producing a glistening sticky dew on the leaves, which lure insects. When they land, they get glued to the leaf, and this glue starts to digest the insect. Cape Sundews are unique in that they curl their leaves around their victim enlarging the digestive area and digesting the prey much quicker.

Basic Growing Guidelines:

Light: These particular plants thrive on a warm windowsill that gets direct morning sun, and bright light the rest of the day, with little to no wind.
Soil: Our standard carnivorous soil mix is ideal for this plant. (1 part peat to 1 part perlite.)
Feeding: You can supplement feeding with crushed fish food flakes. A weekly spray of a light foliar fertilizer will also benefit the plant.
Humidity: 60% plus is ideal.
Water:  Keep the soil wet using the tray method but never let the water level get higher than 1/4 of the pot height. Use Reverse Osmosis, Distilled or Rain Water Only.
Temperature: While most Sundews can tolerate very high temperatures, these guys prefer temps between 20 to 30 degrees Celcius. Dew production will stop if the plant gets too hot. Protect from frost and extreme cold weather. They do not like it when temps drop below 18 degrees.
Dormancy: No winter dormancy is needed but growth will slow in colder climates.

A summary of plant care is provided with each plant.
